ABATE of South Carolina, Inc. is the motorcyclists' rights organization of South Carolina. Our members brought freedom of choice to South Carolina bikers in June of 1980; ABATE amended South Carolina's mandatory motorcycle helmet law to allow adult freedom of choice. ABATE stands for A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments. Our philosophy is to defend liberty; while we do not oppose safety devices we oppose laws that mandate the usage of devices.

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed the Helmet Choice law into effect yesterday. Now Michigan bikers 21 and older can enjoy riding free like we already do here in South Carolina.

ABATE: Governor Signs Helmet Choice Law
Michigan joins 30 other states to allow adult choice on helmet use, toughens standards

LANSING– After 46 years, Michigan now joins 30 other states in amending the mandatory helmet law in favor of adult choice. The Michigan legislature overwhelmingly approved SB 291 with broad bi-partisan support and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder signed Public Act 98 into law, yesterday. The new law modernizes Michigan’s outdated mandatory helmet law, which was a holdover from bygone days leaving Michigan, in the minority—one of only 20 states left enforcing an empty federal mandate.

South Carolina Motorcycle Statutes

Our friends at Tom McGrath's Motorcycle Law Group have compiled a list of laws that apply to motorcyclists in South Carolina, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, and Georgia.

South Carolina has several statutes that directly relate to motorcyclists, including licensure, inspections, and use of public roads. If you feel that your rights have been violated call them at 1-800-321-8968 and speak with one of their attorneys who practice in South Carolina.
